I have an iMac at home (which is on 24/7) and can access it via my iPhone with an app called VNC Pocket office. I NEVER use it. I find it very hard to navigate and loading times are way too long.

One tool that I do find very handy is an iPhone app named Caravan. It lets you scroll through the documents stored on my iMac trhough my iPhone. It also has a reader so you can also read docs. Caravan is so much faster than vnc and much easier to navigate.

I dont really need to access my iMac for other reasons than downloading or reading doc or FTP files.

Thanks Erik - the trick I'm aiming for is to actually have iPhoto automatically connect when I plug in my actual camera, but not when I plug in the iPhone. Setting it to "No application" means that iPhoto doesn't connect when any camera / device is connected.

in iphoto go to preferences>general> "when connecting camera" --> select No application

Thanks for the comment Janice. I downloaded Things and have been playing around with it this week as well. I’m not sure if my feeling that it won’t fit is because I haven’t dedicated enough time to it to figure out everything or because there are some genuine features that it’s missing for me. I’ll have a think and try to post a follow up.
